What We Treat

Assessment

Our assessment process is not one-and-done. We use evidence-based diagnostic tools to understand current symptoms and we continue to assess throughout our time together. By continuing to objectively monitor symptoms, we can ensure that treatment is leading to measurable change that is sustained over time.

Collaboration

Children thrive when those around them are all on the same page. Our clinicians actively collaborate with pediatricians, occupational and speech therapists, schools, and caregivers to ensure comprehensive and consistent support is provided throughout treatment.

Therapy

Our team takes an active approach to therapy, inspiring bravery, playfulness, and a new relationship with emotions. We stay up-to-date on psychological research, incorporating the latest findings into treatment to ensure your child and family gets the very best services. We provide therapies that have been supported by research and found to be effective in the treatment of childhood disorders.

Diagnostic Assessments

We bring expertise in mental health, and you bring expertise in your family; together, we can understand what is getting in the way for your child and develop a plan forward.

Individual Therapy

Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT)

CBT helps individuals understand the connection between thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. Treatment is active and engaging – kids learn to identify unhelpful thoughts, shift thinking patterns, problem-solve, and engage in behaviors that improve mood.

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)

ACT is a newer therapeutic approach that has strong research support for both anxiety and OCD. It helps youth get in touch with their values – with what matters most to them – and to engage in actions that are in service of those values. The incorporation of mindfulness (intentionally being in the present moment, without judgment) helps kids and teens to pause and move in their valued direction.

Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP)

ERP is a component of CBT that is at the heart of treatment for OCD and most anxiety disorders. With significant support, kids move in the direction of facing feared situations. Our clinicians specialize in tailoring ERP’s pacing and intensity to each individual, and we integrate cutting-edge technology to enhance treatment – from using virtual reality environments to visiting feared places via telehealth.

Virtual Reality

Part of our mission is to leverage the latest technology to promote kids’ emotional wellbeing. That’s why we incorporate state-of-the-art virtual reality (VR) services into treatment for anxiety and OCD. Available for both virtual and in-person sessions, VR allows our clinicians to tailor exposures to a whole new degree. Research has shown that VR helps patients’ willingness to engage in exposure therapy and to stick with it.

Parent-Based Treatment

Parent Management Training

Parent Management Training (PMT) builds evidence-based parenting skills for managing the challenging behaviors that can come with strong feelings. Children do not attend PMT sessions; instead, the caregivers and therapist discuss new parenting approaches and make a tailored plan for how these can be applied in real life.

Supportive Parenting for Anxious Childhood Emotions (SPACE)

SPACE is a new, well-supported treatment for childhood anxiety and OCD that involves working directly with parents. Rigorous studies have shown this approach to be as effective as working directly with kids and teens. Parents learn critical skills for helping their anxious child to face fears and learn that they can handle anxiety. WholeMind clinicians have trained with Eli Lebowitz, PhD, who created the treatment.

Parent-Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT)

PCIT is a family-based treatment that addresses challenging behaviors in young children. Clinicians observe parent-child play and offer in-the-moment coaching that strengthens parent-child interactions and decreases oppositional behaviors. Psychologists at WholeMind have undergone the rigorous PCIT International certification process.
