The Power of a Combination

Date: August 08, 2025

As parents, you often find yourself searching for answers when your child struggles with anxiety, or in this case, OCD. It probably feels overwhelming, helpless, and confusing, not knowing which route of treatment is best for your child. But it is crucial to note that every child is unique, and different therapies and medications work differently for each child.

However, a recent study examining the treatment of Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder in children and youth has concluded that there is a powerful combination of tools that have been proven to be most effective at treating OCD. You may have heard about two helpful strategies: ERP, also known as Exposure and Response Prevention Therapy, and medication, specifically selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), before. This post will discuss the benefits of the combination of these two treatments in potentially helping your child combat their OCD.

Understanding ERP: Facing Fears Gradually

Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP) therapy helps your child face their worries with a gentle and gradual touch. ERP helps children confront their fears and uncomfortable environments, while also resisting their urge to engage in compulsive or avoidant behaviors. ERP teaches children to approach the things they are afraid of step-by-step until the fear no longer impacts day-to-day life. The goal of ERP is that over time, their anxiety towards these uncomfortable situations and feelings diminishes and becomes more manageable.

How Medication Helps

Medication, especially SSRIs (selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors), can help your child by regulating their emotions during anxious times. Medication isn't about completely removing anxiety, but instead lowering the volume of their worries. This can help your child feel less overwhelmed and ready to face uncomfortable situations.

Why Combining ERP and Medication Works Best

Consider combining ERP and medication, much like using training wheels (medication) while also actively pedaling and steering (ERP). Together, they can help your child feel safer and more capable of confronting their fears.

  • Medication can make ERP easier: When anxiety feels less overwhelming, your child might be more willing to participate in ERP exercises.
  • ERP provides lasting skills: While medication can offer relief, ERP helps your child build long-lasting skills to manage their anxiety.

Is Combining Right for Every Child?

Every child is unique. Some kids do wonderfully with ERP alone. Others might benefit from the gentle support that medication provides. It’s helpful to think of medicines as an extra tool, especially if your child struggles with high anxiety that makes ERP feel too challenging on its own.

Finding the Right Path for Your Family

Every child’s journey with OCD and anxiety is unique. While combining medication with ERP might not be the perfect solution for everyone, it is a route to consider when discussing treatment options for your child. The goal of this combination is to equip your child with practical tools to manage their anxiety that they feel capable of using with the additional sense of security provided by medication.
